MD Live review

Benefits based prescribing

GLP-1 prescribing through eligible Routine Care visits, with benefits, state and pharmacy restrictions to check first.

Our verdict

MD Live is worth considering if your benefits include its relevant weight-management care and you want ongoing virtual primary care. Confirm the visit type and prescription coverage before booking; ordinary MD Live access does not establish either.

What it is

MD Live offers several kinds of virtual care, but its weight-management prescribing has specific entry requirements. Its current GLP-1 FAQ says a doctor may prescribe medicines such as Wegovy or Zepbound through a Routine Care visit. An Urgent Care appointment or a Primary Care Wellness Screening cannot provide that prescription. Clinical consultations are delivered by medical practitioners rather than the platform itself, as the benefit-portal privacy policy explains. That distinction matters when you want to understand who provides treatment and which privacy notice applies to your medical records.

How it works

Eligible adults can use Primary Care for ongoing consultations, choose a doctor and return to that doctor for follow-up. The clinician can order laboratory work or referrals when appropriate. Digital coaching may be assigned for qualifying conditions; it is not automatically part of every visit. The separate pharmacy-benefit weight-management portal describes a different access arrangement and a defined visit allowance. Its materials should not be treated as the benefit schedule for every Primary Care member. Before starting, establish which service your plan provides and who will manage follow-up if you need additional appointments.

Pricing transparency

There is no single public GLP-1 package price that applies to every MD Live patient. Visit copays and prescription charges depend on your health-plan benefits. The weight-management article says a doctor can review covered medicines and associated out-of-pocket costs, but not every plan covers treatment. An inexpensive consultation does not establish an inexpensive prescription. Ask separately about visit charges, medication coverage, prior authorization and laboratory costs. A generic Urgent Care fee cannot price this Routine Care service. The dedicated pharmacy-benefit portal describes sponsor-provided visits, which should not be read as a universal free-care or free-medication promise.

Branded vs compounded

MD Live names approved brands, including Wegovy and Zepbound, as possible treatments at the doctor’s discretion. Its treatment list excludes compounded medications, and its weight-management article describes an FDA-approved medication approach. That does not guarantee a particular brand, dose or supply after a consultation. If treatment is appropriate, prescriptions can go to your preferred pharmacy; eligible prescriptions may also use mail order. MD Live is therefore better understood as a route to prescribing and follow-up than as a fixed-price drug shipment. Confirm pharmacy availability and your final dispensing cost separately.

Pros and watch-outs

What we like

  • Ongoing care with a chosen primary doctor
  • Prescriptions sent to your preferred pharmacy
  • Clear restrictions on prescribing visit types

Watch-outs

  • Access depends on selected plan benefits
  • Four states excluded from anti-obesity prescribing
  • No universal medication-inclusive monthly price

Sources

Best for

Adults with eligible benefits who want weight-management prescribing within a continuing virtual primary care relationship. It can be useful when coordinating appointments, labs and care with an existing local doctor.

Who should look elsewhere

Someone seeking a guaranteed prescription through an urgent visit, a compounded medication subscription or a uniform cash package. Patients in an excluded state need another appropriate prescribing route.

How we assessed this. This review reflects GLP Loss’s own read of MD Live’s publicly-stated model — pricing transparency, clinical oversight, medication clarity, and access — against our editorial methodology. Frequently asked

Which MD Live visit can prescribe a GLP-1?
The current prescribing FAQ limits weight-management GLP-1 prescriptions to Routine Care visits, at the physician’s discretion. Neither Urgent Care nor a Primary Care Wellness Screening can issue them. Confirm that your benefits include the correct visit before scheduling; a wellness appointment can have a different purpose.
Are weight-loss prescriptions available in every state?
No. MD Live’s current treatment page excludes Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and New Jersey from anti-obesity prescribing. General availability of other MD Live services does not override that restriction. Access elsewhere still depends on your benefit eligibility and the clinician’s assessment.
Does insurance access mean the medicine is covered?
No. The weight-management article says visit copays and prescription costs depend on your plan, and not all plans include coverage. Check the specific medicine and any approval requirements with your benefits. Coverage for a consultation is not confirmation that a pharmacy claim will be paid.
What does the separate pharmacy-benefit program include?
Its FAQ describes six included visits over approximately two years for its eligible participants, with another in-network provider recommended when more support is needed. That is a particular benefit arrangement, not a universal MD Live allowance. Confirm your current sponsor materials rather than assuming this portal describes your plan.
Do I have to buy compounded medication from MD Live?
No. The treatment list excludes compounded medications. When a prescription is appropriate, the weight-management article says it can go to your preferred local pharmacy or eligible mail order. Ask about the prescribed brand, dispensing availability and price; none is guaranteed simply because the clinician can prescribe.
What happens if I cancel a Routine Care appointment?
The Primary Care page lists a possible $25 fee for cancellation within two hours of a Routine Care appointment. It states exceptions for Medicaid and Medicare members and possible emergency or technical waivers. Review the policy shown before booking; a late-cancellation charge is separate from medication or pharmacy refund terms.
